Graig Wen sits in 45 private acres of oak woodland above the Mawddach Estuary, between the seaside town of Barmouth and the market town of Dolgellau, with Cadair Idris rising across the water. It's a small, deliberately low-key site: a sheltered field for campervans and small caravans with electric hook-ups, a wilder camping meadow for tents where fires are allowed, and a scattering of yurts, wagons and a shepherd's hut for glamping. The estuary and the Mawddach cycle trail (the old Barmouth to Dolgellau railway line) run right past the gate, so bikes and kayaks get more use here than cars. It has picked up national tourism awards for sustainability, and the setting, looking down through the trees to the water and the mountains beyond, is the main reason people come back.
