Camping in Scotland: what to know

Scotland is the wildest camping in the UK. Formal campsites here sit beside sea lochs, at the head of glens and on islands reached by ferry, and the right to roam means the surrounding hills are yours to explore. From Glencoe to the Cairngorms and the Outer Hebrides, the scale is unlike anywhere else in Britain.

The camping season runs from April to October, with May and June offering long daylight and — crucially — fewer midges. Many Highland sites now offer pods and wigwams, a welcome refuge when the weather turns.

Scotland camping FAQs

Is wild camping allowed in Scotland?

Yes, under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code you can wild camp responsibly on most unenclosed land. Byelaws restrict camping in parts of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs between March and September, where permits or campsites are required. Formal campsites offer hot showers and a place to dry out, which you will appreciate.

When are midges worst in Scotland?

Midges peak from mid-June to August, especially on still, damp evenings on the west coast. Choose breezy coastal or elevated sites, pack repellent and a head net, and consider May or September for a midge-light trip.

Can I camp along the North Coast 500?

Yes, and you should book ahead. Campsites along the NC500 — around Durness, Applecross, Ullapool and John o’ Groats — fill quickly in summer. Wild camping in vehicles is not covered by the access code, so campervans should use designated sites.
