Northumberland is England’s emptiest county and one of its most rewarding for campers. The coast is an unbroken sweep of castles and dunes — Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick and Holy Island — with campsites tucked behind the beaches. Inland, Hadrian’s Wall runs along the crags near Once Brewed, and the Cheviots offer genuinely lonely hill walking.

Kielder Water & Forest Park holds Gold Tier Dark Sky status, the largest such area in Europe. Camping here in autumn, with the observatory nearby, is a stargazing experience few places can match.

Campsites around Haltwhistle, Once Brewed and Greenhead sit within a mile or two of the wall’s most dramatic central section, including Sycamore Gap and Housesteads fort.

Are there campsites on the Northumberland coast?

Yes, particularly around Beadnell, Seahouses, Bamburgh and Alnmouth. Several are a short walk over the dunes to wide sandy beaches, with boat trips to the Farne Islands from Seahouses.

Is Northumberland good for stargazing?
