Camping in the Yorkshire Dales: what to know

The Yorkshire Dales are classic English upland: limestone pavements, drystone walls, stone barns and rivers running through wide green valleys. Campsites here tend to be family-run farm sites in Wensleydale, Swaledale and Wharfedale, with the Pennine Way and Dales Way passing close by.

Ribblesdale is the base for the Yorkshire Three Peaks (Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough), Malham for its famous cove and tarn, and Hawes for the Wensleydale Creamery and Hardraw Force waterfall. The Dales are also a Dark Sky Reserve, so clear nights are exceptional.

Where can I camp for the Yorkshire Three Peaks?

Horton-in-Ribblesdale is the traditional start and has campsites within walking distance. Sites in Ingleton, Clapham and Chapel-le-Dale are also convenient for individual peaks.

Are there campsites near Malham Cove?

Yes, there are several small farm campsites in and around Malham village, from which Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Malham Tarn can all be walked in a single loop.

Do Yorkshire Dales campsites allow campfires?

Many farm sites allow fire pits off the ground or provide braziers; open fires on grass are rarely permitted. Check the listing and always ask on arrival.
