About this campsite
Saddlescombe Farm is a National Trust working farm cradled in a dry valley of the South Downs, right on the South Downs Way and about a mile and a half from Devil's Dyke. It's one of the few genuinely car-free campsites left in the South East — there's no vehicle access onto the farm at all, so it's reached on foot or bike from a nearby car park, which keeps it quiet and gives it a slightly old-fashioned, back-to-basics feel. Camping is tents-only, in an open field looked over by the farm's grazing sheep, with a simple toilet block and a water tap but no showers, no electric hook-ups and no campfires, though raised barbecues are allowed. A small café run from the farm's historic buildings opens at limited hours for teas and light food. It's really built for walkers and cyclists on the Way rather than a family holiday base, and stays are capped at two nights to keep pitches turning over for through-hikers.
