Camping in the Brecon Beacons: what to know

Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) was the first place in Wales to be named an International Dark Sky Reserve, and camping here is as much about the night sky as the hills. Sites along the River Usk and in the Black Mountains combine easy access to Pen y Fan with genuinely dark, quiet evenings.

To the west, Waterfall Country around Ystradfellte and the wild Black Mountain (Y Mynydd Du) offer some of the least-visited walking in southern Britain. The park is under an hour from Cardiff, Bristol and Hereford, making it a favourite for weekend escapes.

Campsites around Brecon, Libanus and Talybont-on-Usk are within 15 minutes’ drive of the Pont ar Daf and Storey Arms car parks, the most popular starting points for Pen y Fan.

Is the Brecon Beacons good for stargazing?

Exceptional. As an International Dark Sky Reserve, the park has minimal light pollution. On a clear, moonless night you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye from most campsites.

Are there campsites with rivers in the Brecon Beacons?

Yes — the Usk, Wye and Tawe valleys all have riverside sites, many with shallow spots for paddling. Camping near Crickhowell and Talgarth puts you close to both the river and the Black Mountains.
