Side Farm sits at the foot of Place Fell, right where the Ullswater Way footpath passes below Patterdale, with the Helvellyn range filling the skyline across the water. It's a proper first-come, first-served farm site - no advance bookings, you simply turn up, pitch on the open grass, and pay at the farm tea room, which is handy for scones after a day on the fells or a trip on the Ullswater steamers. Facilities are simple but well kept, with hot showers, a laundry room and a separate pot-wash area, and the site is as popular with parties walking the Coast to Coast route as with families on a lakeside holiday. Dogs are welcome, and it gets busy on bank holiday weekends, so arriving early in high season pays off.
