Camping in Devon: what to know

Devon has two coastlines and two national parks, which means enormous variety within an hour’s drive. North Devon is surf beaches and dramatic cliffs around Croyde, Woolacombe and Hartland; South Devon is estuaries, sailing and family beaches in the South Hams and Torbay. In between, Dartmoor offers granite tors, wild ponies and the only legal wild camping in England.

Devon campsites are famously welcoming — think cream teas at reception, farm shops and pubs within walking distance. Coastal sites book up for July and August; Dartmoor and Exmoor sites are easier to find and often quieter.

Devon camping FAQs

Can I wild camp on Dartmoor?

Yes, in designated areas of Dartmoor National Park backpack camping is permitted for one or two nights, following the park’s code. It is the only place in England with this right. Formal campsites around Princetown, Widecombe and Okehampton offer facilities alongside moorland access.

Is North or South Devon better for camping?

North Devon for surf, big beaches and a livelier feel; South Devon for calmer water, sailing, and picturesque villages like Salcombe and Dartmouth. Both have excellent campsites.

Are there campsites near Exmoor?

Yes, around Lynton, Porlock, Dulverton and Combe Martin. Exmoor combines high moorland with a spectacular coast and is a Dark Sky Reserve.
